Audiovisual Translation

Audiovisual content has an-ever growing presence in our lives. This is hugely connected to the increasing amount of time we spend in front of our screens, where much of what we consume is, as one can imagine, audiovisual. Years ago, audiovisual content was everything that came out of the TV and the movie theater. Nowadays, the situation is quite different. The consumption channels have multiplied, placing at our disposal countless hours of entertainment with sound and image as the protagonists. And, if the audiovisual content supply is increasing, the audiovisual translation demand is too.

But this is not just any kind of translation. Audiovisual translation displays a very specific set of challenges, which must be tackled effectively and creatively. To begin with, the audiovisual translator is met with time and space restrictions when conveying the message from the original language to the target one. In the case of subtitles, all the information shared in the dialogue must be reflected on a limited number of characters, so that the viewer has enough time to read the subtitles and, at the same time, keep track of what is happening on the screen. And, of course, the text cannot contradict the image in any way. The ultimate goal is for the audience to enjoy the experience without worrying about the language barrier.
