Illustrated Literature Translation
Illustrated Literature Translation
Translation of illustrated literary works and other illustrated texts.
illustrated stories, cartoons, etc.
Comics, illustrated stories and graphic novels have something very important in common: they all present text and image as an inseparable whole. Those three formats, along with other similar ones, constitute a very specific literary family, that of illustrated literature, which can boast of being the one that starts us all on reading. However, that does not mean that this type of literature is limited only to the younger ones. There is an ever-growing supply and demand of these pieces of literary work —both of fiction and non-fiction—, which use a combination of text and image to get to readers of all ages.
Illustrated Literature Translation displays certain particularities and difficulties, which make it a part of specialized translation. This type of translation depends entirely on space, as well as image: the speech bubbles or the space devoted to the story is limited, which means that the translation text has to be of a similar length to the original; and, at the same time, the translation has to be cohesive and non-contradictory to the accompanying image.
At The Good Translator we include in this translation category all works of illustrated literature in which the image has a direct impact on the text.
